Dale Earnhardt Jr will begin the 2010 season under the glare of a spotlight. His fan base is known for its almost fanatical loyalty but his detractors are just as vocal. After the worst season of his career, both sides are waiting to see what he does next.

It’s interesting to note how two groups of people can look at the same person or situation and come to two completely different conclusions. Our perceptions are colored by life experiences, emotions and countless other variables. This usually results in heated debate especially when the subject is Dale Jr.

The first thing you’ll hear from many race fans is that Jr is not as good as his Daddy and he never will be. They’ll go on to tell you that he would never have gotten a chance to become a stock car driver if not for his famous father.

This may be true but what does it really mean?

Dale Jr may not be as skilled as his father but very few racers, past or present, will ever measure up to “The Intimidator.” To hold his son to such a high standard is an unrealistic expectation and an unfair criticism.

Would Jr have gotten a chance to race if his last name wasn’t Earnhardt? While we can never know for certain, it’s logical to assume that his father provided opportunities for his son that he may not have gotten otherwise.

The same holds true in many businesses. Procuring a job or obtaining a promotion often hinges on who you know.

Critics of Dale Jr will say he’s had it too easy. They question his passion to succeed, his dedication and his focus.

There’s no doubt that growing up as the son of a famous racer had its perks but Jr’s life has not always been easy.

He suffered the tragic loss of his father under the watchful eyes of the world. His determination to continue to race and honor his Dad’s memory touched race fans everywhere.

His supporters still see that same determination and desire today.

The 2009 season was a true test of Jr’s commitment. His critics might point to last year and tell you that Dale Jr has given up and no longer has what it takes to win.

But, if you listen carefully to Dale Jr., it sounds like nothing could be further from the truth.

“Our goal is to win as many races as we can, win the championship, challenge for the championship. I’d like to win – I think anything less than three races this year I’d be a little bit disappointed.”

His fans will undoubtedly view these words with renewed optimism and a sign of Jr’s confidence. Others may see it as arrogance or a foolhardy boast.

The opinions are varied and the debate is never-ending but one thing is certain. Fans and critics alike are passionate about NASCAR’s favorite driver.

When you look at Dale Earnhardt Jr, what do you see?
