Dale Earnhardt Jr. Wins with a Little Help from his Friends

(c) Nascar Media

The Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday was one of the most widely anticipated races of the year.

The excitement began on April 29, 2010 when Earnhardt announced that he would drive the No. 3 with a special blue and yellow Wrangler paint scheme reminiscent of one his father drove in the 1980’s.

This venture was months in the making and required the cooperation of several different organizations.

“This idea came up as a way to pay tribute to my Dad,” Earnhardt said, “and it’s pretty cool that it’s a collaborative effort between JR Motorsports, RCR and DEI.” Continue reading →

NASCAR Beginnings: Joe Weatherly – The Clown Prince of Racing

Joe Weatherly had a short but extraordinary career. His exploits off the track were as legendary as his accomplishments on the track.

When you hear people talk about the drivers who were there at the beginning of NASCAR, you often hear them called “good old boys.”

If you’re not sure what that means, just take a close look at Joe Weatherly.

He was well known for his love of liquor, women and hard racing. Weatherly was also the king of practical jokes and became known as “The Clown Prince of Racing.”

In the days before start switches, Weatherly would sneak along pit road and steal the keys to all the cars. When the command, “Gentlemen, start your engines,” was given, only one car fired up. It didn’t take much detective work to figure out that Weatherly was the culprit. Continue reading →

The organization has released 25-year-old Kelly Bires from his contractual driving duties of the No. 88 Chevrolet.  NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regular Jamie McMurray, driver of the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops/McDonalds Chevrolet for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, has agreed to a deal that puts him in the No. 88 JR Motorsports Chevy for nine races.  Those races include the six upcoming Nationwide Series events – Texas (April 17), Talladega (April 24), Richmond (April 30), Darlington (May 7), Dover (May 15) and Charlotte (May 30) – plus Chicagoland (July 9), Atlanta (Sept. 4) and the return trip to Charlotte (Oct. 15).  The Hellmann’s brand will be the primary sponsor in all but two of those races, and the Suave Men brand will be featured on the No. 88 at Chicagoland Speedway.

The world was watching as Danica Patrick made her first stock car start at the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200, an ARCA Series event at Daytona International Speedway.

Her foray into NASCAR has been eagerly anticipated since the announcement was made this past December that she was joining JR Motorsports. Fans and critics alike have been vocal in expressing their differing opinions.

A third contingent of fans took the wait and see attitude and Danica did not disappoint.

She qualified in the 12th position, stayed in the top ten for much of the race and ran as high as fifth at one point. On lap 54, however, she bumped fenders with Nelson Piquet Jr., spinning off the track and into the grass. She managed to straighten out her car and avoid the other drivers, exhibiting great car control. Continue reading →

The speculation is finally over as Danica Patrick made it official today that she has signed with JR Motorsports. In a press conference streamed online at GoDaddy.com, Patrick was joined by GoDaddy CEO Bob Parsons and Kelley Earnhardt, co-owner of JR Motorsports.

Her #7 car sponsored by GoDaddy was unveiled as it was announced that she would run a limited Nationwide Series schedule in 2010. Tony Eury Jr. will join the team as her crew chief.

Patrick begins her first challenge by participating in ARCA Series testing December 18th-20th at Daytona International Speedway.  She’ll run her first race at the ARCA season opener on February 6, 2010.

Danica Patrick coupled with Dale Earnhardt Jr and Hendrick Motorsports is a winning combination in anyone’s book. Regardless of how Patrick fares, the resultant media frenzy can only benefit NASCAR who was plagued this past season by sagging ratings.

Kelley Earnhardt is hoping that Danica might be the right person to finally propel JR Motorsports to the next level. Continue reading →
