A Walk through the NASCAR Hall of Fame

Nascar Hall of Fame

I woke up early in anticipation of my visit to the Hall of Fame.  After a stop to meet up with a pal, we were on our way and finally arrived around 11:30am.

The first stop was a visit to The High Octane Theater to see a short film about the evolution of NASCAR.  It was just enough to get the adrenalin pumping and we walked out eager to explore.

The first thing that caught my eye was Dale Jr’s bright yellow and blue No. 3 Wrangler car.  As I approached to get a closer look, I found myself grinning from ear to ear.  His emotional win in the Nationwide Series race at Daytona just a few weeks earlier will probably always be one of my favorite NASCAR memories.

I was especially pleased to see that the car had been brought from the track perfectly preserved, down to the mud splattered hood and windshield. Continue reading →

PRESS RELEASE

08.18.10

JR Motorsports cemented an integral part of its future Wednesday by signing Aric Almirola to a multi-year driving contract for the company’s flagship No. 88 NASCAR Nationwide Series team starting in 2011, general manager Kelley Earnhardt announced today.

A 26-year-old native of Tampa, Fla., Almirola has 32 career Nationwide Series starts, including one for JR Motorsports in which he finished third at O’Reilly Raceway Park in July.  Almirola’s full-time duties as the No. 88 driver will officially begin in 2011, but he could potentially fill the seat in select races this season while he continues to run for a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship.

“The chance to drive full time in the Nationwide Series with a top caliber team is something I am extremely excited about,” Almirola said.  “I was at the shop yesterday, and Kelley gathered all the employees around to announce our deal.  The energy and excitement was addicting.  We raced at ORP together a month ago and had a really good run.  There is no reason why we cannot compete like that every race, and there is no reason why we shouldn’t be running for a championship.  I would expect nothing less.” Continue reading →

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Wins with a Little Help from his Friends

The Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday was one of the most widely anticipated races of the year.

The excitement began on April 29, 2010 when Earnhardt announced that he would drive the No. 3 with a special blue and yellow Wrangler paint scheme reminiscent of one his father drove in the 1980’s.

This venture was months in the making and required the cooperation of several different organizations.

“This idea came up as a way to pay tribute to my Dad,” Earnhardt said, “and it’s pretty cool that it’s a collaborative effort between JR Motorsports, RCR and DEI.” Continue reading →

JR Motorsports Enacts Driver Change for No. 88 Team

PRESS RELEASE

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (April  13, 2010) – JR Motorsports will undergo a driver change to its No. 88 NASCAR Nationwide Series team effective this weekend when the series races at Texas Motor Speedway, general manager and co-owner Kelley Earnhardt announced today.

The organization has released 25-year-old Kelly Bires from his contractual driving duties of the No. 88 Chevrolet.  NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regular Jamie McMurray, driver of the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops/McDonalds Chevrolet for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, has agreed to a deal that puts him in the No. 88 JR Motorsports Chevy for nine races.  Those races include the six upcoming Nationwide Series events – Texas (April 17), Talladega (April 24), Richmond (April 30), Darlington (May 7), Dover (May 15) and Charlotte (May 30) – plus Chicagoland (July 9), Atlanta (Sept. 4) and the return trip to Charlotte (Oct. 15).  The Hellmann’s brand will be the primary sponsor in all but two of those races, and the Suave Men brand will be featured on the No. 88 at Chicagoland Speedway.

A native of Joplin, Mo., McMurray is the reigning Daytona 500 champion.  He is a seven-time winner in the Nationwide Series with 27 top-fives, 59 top-10s, and three pole awards.  No driver decisions for the No. 88 have been determined beyond McMurray’s nine races. Continue reading →

Remembering Alan Kulwicki – Against All Odds

Let’s travel back in time to NASCAR 1985. If you take a look around on race day, you’ll see the likes of Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt and Bill Elliot.

In the midst of this, we see a young man walk by wearing a fire suit and carrying a briefcase. Can you imagine the whispered remarks those “good ole boys” made as Alan Kulwicki walked past?

He was originally from Wisconsin, had a mechanical engineering degree and was a college graduate. To say that he was an oddity in NASCAR is putting it mildly.

But Kulwicki didn’t worry about things like fitting in; he was there to win races.

He was often described as a perfectionist and a control freak and perhaps that’s why he chose to work for himself. After all, no one else could measure up to his high standards. Continue reading →

The race weekend has just started but the fireworks have already been lit.

The media is still debating the Edwards/Keselowski rivalry and even Dale Earnhardt Jr. has chimed in with his take on Brad’s aggressive driving style.

Earnhardt Jr. describes Keselowski’s rookie season as a work in progress.

“Everybody does it differently,” he said. “Brad really has a lot of talent.  He’s just overzealous to prove it and to be there in front every week where he thinks he needs to be. It’ll all be OK.”

“He’ll get to learn a lot of lessons in his rookie season, every rookie does, and he’ll probably be glad to tell you guys all about it at the end of the season. And I’m sure his tune will be just slightly different than it is right now.”

While this incident is winding down, a new controversy has been ignited. Continue reading →

The Power of Words-Remembering David Poole

I was recently reminded that this Sunday would have been David Poole’s 51st birthday. His absence is still deeply felt by the entire NASCAR community.

It made me remember why I wanted to become a writer.

I’ve always loved to write.  All you need is some inspiration and a few carefully chosen words to weave a story that others will want to read. The possibilities are endless and you’re only limited by your own imagination.

I’ve spent hours searching for that one perfect word or phrase to describe a particular mood or emotion.  But when it all comes together, when you’ve finally gotten it right, the written word can be magical.

David Poole is a perfect example of someone who got it right. Continue reading →
